Small Claims

The Gordon Law Firm can help you if you have a small claims matter (a claim that is for an amount less than $5000).  It surprises many people, but it is often a challenge to seek such amounts, not because of any particular legal difficulty, but because of the economics of paying a lawyer in such a case.

A great benefit of small claims court matters is that the process is greatly simplified: an attorney is not required, the legal process is less complex, and the rules are less stringent than in a normal county or circuit court matter.  However, for those that wish to have legal representation, these same factors make it possible for The Gordon Law Firm to provide representation to you in an affordable and predictable manner.  Moreover, such representation can be customized to meet your specific needs–Brent can act as an adviser to you in the process or can provide full representation.

Regardless of the amount you are seeking in small claims court, if you and The Gordon Law Firm agree to representation, costs will be the actual costs and attorney fees will be a flat fee of the following for all work up to judgment (but not including post-judgment, collections, or appellate work):

  1. $400 – $650 – Advisory role (Explain the process, answer questions in office and by telephone regarding substantive and procedural issues, discuss case strategies for client to pursue)
  2. $650 – $1000 –  Consultant role (all of the above, plus assisting with the drafting of legal documents)
  3. $1000 – $2500 – Full Attorney Representation (all of the above, plus attend Pre-Trial Conference/Mediation and trial, if necessary) (additional travel charges may apply depending on location).

The listed fees above are a guideline and the actual fee will be dependent upon the nature of the case, the amount in controversy, and the location where a suit would be located. Brent will work with you to determine the best option for your needs and goals.  For additional information regarding small claims court, please see this post.

The above list of work for each case will depend on the facts and circumstances of the matter, but the work involved and specific responsibilities will be explained prior to entering into any agreement of representation.
